Spruce Hill Veterinary Clinic is named for Spruce Hill in Philadelphia, where the original clinic was located two blocks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. This clinic was staffed by recent veterinary school graduates who were continuing their education in specialty fields.
Dr. Ken Bernstein, a 1973 graduate who was doing a internship in pathology, purchased the clinic and was joined by his wife, Dr. Sherry Himmelstein when she graduated in 1976. In 1978, they relocated to Western Mass and kept the same name for their new clinic in Springfield. In 1986, they were joined by Dr. Tom Crosson, a graduate of Tufts Veterinary School.
